Many people wonder why I sent my children to catholic school. I explain to them that it is how I was raised and it is all that I know. I attended Catholic School during my elementary years. I later attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, specialized school in which students are accepted through auditions in the fields of vocal music, instrumental, drama etc. I then attend a Catholic College. I of all people know the difficulty of trying to fit in when you have been sheltered most of your life. I now believe that it might even be more difficult for a young African-American who attended Catholic School his entire 18 years of life to be thrust into a major city like Orlando. It did not occur to me to prepare him for a different world, a different culture outside the confines of his Catholic upbringing. He wanted to go to college in Orlando. I agreed. His grandmother thought that he shouldn’t go so far away She felt that he wasn’t emotionally mature enough ready for the big city. I should have listened to my mother.
